What's Cookin' Wednesday - The Informed Eater
Our favorite foodie, Patrick Evans-Hylton, joins us in the studio today. We'll talk with Dr. David Kessler, former commissioner of the FDA, author of The End of Overeating about why it's so hard to say 'no' to some foods. We also speak with Dr. John LaPuma and local chef and cookbook author Janie Jacobson about maximizing the nutritional benefit in what you eat so that you get the most out of your meals. Join us!

Studio Snack: Tomato Dipping Sauce

From Chef Patrick Evans-Hylton
www.patrickevanshylton.com

3/4 cup tomato juice (I prefer homemade)
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 clove garlic, minced
1-1/2 teaspoons sugar (I prefer a natural, unrefined sugar)
1-1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Place all ingredients in a large bowl (or blender) and whisk to thoroughly incorporate.
To serve, pour in a bowl olive oil on a 1:2 ratio of oil to dipping sauce.
Check Patrick's blog –

Are You Ready for Some ODU Football?
Football players last took to the field for Old Dominion University in 1940. That original program was ended due to poor attendance and boy have times changed. Demand has been even higher than anticipated for season tickets leading up to the kickoff of a new era of ODU football on September 5th. We'll talk with Monarchs' football Head Coach Bobby Wilder and reporter Rich Radford who is covering the team for the Virginian-Pilot today on HearSay.

Married to the Military
Recent studies have confirmed that the demands of waging two wars have magnified the stresses impacting military members and that those stresses often carry over to their home lives and have an effect on their families. Today we'll talk with military spouses about the joys and challenges they face as a result of their loved one's service. We'll talk about everything from employment challenges, including new Federal hiring preferences for spouses, to GI Bill benefits, and from caring for children during deployments to coping with frequent moves - and doing it all with a sense of humor and panache. Guests: Sarah Smiley, syndicated columnist and author of the memoir Going Overboard: The Misadventures of a Military Wife, and a collection of essays titled I’m Just Saying..., Vivian Greentree, Director of Membership and co-founder of Blue Star Families, and Margie Russell and Greta Gary from Naval Station Norfolk's Fleet and Family Support Center.

Forensics Science & Law

Today Virginia's General Assembly is meeting for a special session convened by Governor Tim Kaine to discuss a recent Supreme Court ruling that determined that the Constitution requires prosecutors to make forensic examiners available for defense cross-examination regarding lab reports on drugs, ballistics and other trial evidence. Prosecutors and forensic scientists are concerned about the increased workload that this ruling is anticipated to create will cripple judicial process. Today we talk about what's at stake with forensic and legal experts. Lee Martin, a retired Forensic Crime Scene Investigator with 30 years of service with the Norfolk Police Department, joins us, along with a deputy attorney from the Norfolk Commonwealth Attorney's Office.  Also joining us, Julius Earl Ruffin.  In 2003, after more than two decades after being sent to prison, DNA testing exonerated Ruffin who had been convicted of rape and sentenced to life.
