The Changing Child In The Changing World - UPDATED!

Segment A:
A tired child is a cranky child.  It's nothing new to parents, but some scientists say they're finding children with chronic sleep problems have a raised risk of developing a mental illness later in life.  "The brains of children are far more plastic and amenable to change," says Dr. Candice Alfano, assistant professor of psychology and pediatrics at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.  Dr. Alfano is also the director of the center's Child and Adolescent Anxiety Program and she will join us to talk about recent studies and programs at the center and the importance of a good night's sleep for your child.

The Child and Adolescent Anxiety Program (CAAP) at Children’s National Medical Center

Segment B:
In bestselling author Po Bronson's new book, "NurtureShock," the central premise is that many of modern society’s strategies for nurturing children are backfiring because key twists in the science of it have been overlooked.  The book covers a variety of counterintuitive topics, and relates to all stages of childhood, from toddlers to teens.  During this half-hour, we'll talk with Po Bronson about his new book and take your calls at 440-2665 or 1-800-940-2240.

Shirley Sherrod / Civil Rights Conversations In America Today - January 19, 2011 - Wednesday

An Interview with Shirley Sherrod - UPDATED!

Former USDA Official Shirley Sherrod is the keynote speaker for Old Dominion University's Martin Luther King Jr. Day program at the university tonight.  Sherrod has spent her career working on racial justice issues.  Last year, she worked as the Georgia State Director of Rural Development for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was forced to resign amid controversial remarks.  A blogger had posted remarks Sherrod had made out of context which implied she discriminated against a white farmer.  Subsequent events showed that the posted video was taken out of context and, in fact, was a part of broader comments that conveyed a completely different meaning. The NAACP apologized for its critical comments, and her boss at the USDA also apologized, offering her another job, which she declined.  Sherrod will speak about that issue, as well as other events in her life that have helped shape her beliefs in racial justice and equality, at ODU's MLK Day event at 7:30 p.m. at the university's Webb Center.  The event is free and open to the public. For more information call 683-5759.

Civil Rights Conversations In America Today - UPDATED!

What is the current state of the Civil Rights conversation today in America?  In the second-half of our program, we'll talk with Nichelle Smith, Custom Content Editor for Gannett ContentOne and the site manager for Gannett’s Civil Rights in America: Connections to a Movement website.  Four generations alive today have direct connections to the Civil Rights Movement and each generation has important stories to tell, to pass on, and to hear. Many stories are from icons you recognize; more are from unsung heroes. Gannett's Civil Rights in America: Connections to a Movement website helps tell the complete story, with rich context provided from Gannett newspapers and TV stations that were there at the movement’s height in communities all over the South. The web portal is updated continually and features news stories, personal stories, records and more about the movement.
