Life Through an Artistic Lens

With a steamy combination of biblical themes, sexual tension and murder, Richard Strauss’ Salome surprised opera audiences when it appeared in 1905. Virginia Opera’s upcoming Salome, co-produced with Portland Opera in Oregon, brings those themes to the modern-day Middle East.  The timing is impeccable, and showcases the power of the arts to create a new lens through which we view our existence and place in the world.  We're joined today by the creative minds behind the Virginia Opera's production of Salome for a look at the ever-changing role the arts play in shaping our understanding of major cultural, religious and current events.

The Norfolk Forum Presents: Ayaan Hirsi Ali

In advance of her Tuesday, February 3 Norfolk Forum appearance, we're joined by women's rights activist, writer and politician, Ayaan Hirsi Ali.  She was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1969, and as a young child, she was subjected to female genital mutilation. Later, she escaped an arranged marriage to a distant uncle by feeling to the Netherlands, where she was granted asylum and went on to become an elected member of the Dutch parliament.  Her most recent research focuses on the complex and tumultuous relationship between the West and Islam.

The sound of gunfire in the newsroom of a Paris satirical weekly echoed around the world of satire last Wednesday, but those who make their living at mockery vowed to press on.  As the news spread, American satirists, journalists, humorists and comedians were joining in the condemnations and clarion calls for freedom.  We’re joined today by Virginian-Pilot cartoonist, Walt Taylor, as we consider the potential chilling effect that last week’s attacks could have on similar satirical publications.
