Doing Something about Diabetes

Western Tidewater has one of the highest rates of Diabetes, and deaths as a result of the disease, anywhere in Virginia.  A new partnership between the Obici Healthcare Foundation and Eastern Virginia Medical School is bringing new treatment and care options to residents of Suffolk and surrounding cities with the opening of the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center of Western Tidewater. The weekly clinic will offer screenings, lifestyle intervention and a focus on areas commonly struck by serious complications of diabetes such as the kidneys, eyes and feet.  We're joined today by the center's founders for a conversation about the disease and the vital services the new center will provide.

Virginia's fiscal outlook took an unexpected turn for the better this Sunday. State budget writers on Sunday unveiled two spending plans that would give state employees a pay raise, set aside cash to lure new businesses to the Commonwealth and offer more care to Virginia's mentally ill.  Today on HearSay we'll take a closer look at the two competing budgets and explore which of the two might ultimately be passed.

Segment A: As the new president of the International Rescue Committee, David Miliband has taken on the challenge of the largest refugee crisis in recent history. Having previously served as UK Foreign Secretary, he is well versed on the international policy issues affecting refugees around the world. He joins us today to discuss the range of issues facing refugees around the world, including immediate concerns in Syria, Iraq and South Sudan.

Segment B: In his bestselling book “The Other Wes Moore," Wes Moore recounts his troubled childhood. He was on academic and disciplinary probation by the time he was 9 years and in handcuffs by 11.  However, with the guidance of dedicated mentors like his grandfather, he went to Johns Hopkins University, earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, served in the U.S. military in Afghanistan, and was a White House Fellow. His new book, “The Work: My Search for a Life That Matters,” is a crystallization of those life lessons and he join us today to unpack the power of his guiding mantra: "who will you stand for?"

The Vietnam War: 50 years Later

February 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson’s decision to begin the massive escalation of the Vietnam War. Next to the Civil War, no episode in U.S. history evoked such political and social upheaval as the Vietnam War.  Today, in the backwash of two recent wars with troubling parallels to America’s failure in Vietnam, Christian Appy, author of the oral history of the Vietnam War, Patriots, joins us for an examination into the Vietnam War and how it redefined America’s national identity, conscience, and foreign policy.
