The Virginia 3rd includes all of the independent cities of Petersburg and Portsmouth, parts of the independent cities of Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk and Richmond, all of the Counties of Charles City and Surry, and parts of the Counties of Henrico and Prince George.

In a sink or swim world the Mid Atlantic Maritime Academy Is helping young people with limited opportunities stand on their own two sea legs. For many years, our region's ocean, bay and rivers have provided countless careers for men and women wanting to find work on the water. Now, with current U.S. mariners starting to retire, there's a growing need for new mariners, nearly 70,000 by 2020.  Today we’ll talk about a new boot camp that's breaking the cycle of poverty and providing underserved youth with all the credentials and experience needed for employment aboard a commercial vessel.

While the region's coastlines are one of our greatest assets, our close proximity to water often creates challenges for those attempting to get from one city to another. Those challenges are most acutely felt by commuters across the HRBT or Monitor Merrimack bridge tunnels, but there might be relief in sight. The Virginia Department of Transportation is in the process of reviewing options for a third water-crossing and today we'll talk with Virginia Secretary of Transportation, Aubrey Layne, about the plans being considered.
