Head Case: Sidelining The Old Rules On Youth Concussions
Recent sports headlines have focused on the dangers of head injuries in professional sports, but youth athletes are more likely to suffer from these dangerous injuries than their adult counterparts. On today’s broadcast, Cathy talks with pediatric and neurological specialists about the special challenges of treating – and recovering from – youth concussions.

Scheduled Guests:

Dr. Joel Brenner is the medical director of CHKD's sports medicine program as well as the chairman of the Council on Sports, Medicine and Fitness of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Ralph Northam is a CHKD neurologist, and a Virginia senator. As a neurologist, Dr. Northam has treated the results of concussions and he worked to pass a Virginia law that requires schools to adopt concussion guidelines for young athletes.

Susan Smigielski Acker is a Newport News freelance journalist who is a regular contributor for The Health Journal which covers Richmond and Hampton Roads. She also writes for Inside Business, Tidewater Teacher Magazine, Tidewater Parent Magazine and My Tidewater Moms.com.
