Segment A: Flight from Monticello
Michael Kranish is an author, historian and the Washington correspondent for The Boston Globe. During the 2004 Presidential campaign he began exploring the possibility of authoring a history on the Revolutionary War and came across the story of the 1781 invasion of Virginia, which caused then-Governor Thomas Jefferson and the legislature to abandon the capital in Richmond. This little-explored episode from Jefferson's life lit a spark of inspiration for Kranish and the resulting book Flight from Monticello: Thomas Jefferson at War has garnered rave reviews.
