Segment A: Racial Identity
A key subset of both individual and collective identity is one of racial and ethnic identification. These constructs, for Americans in particular, are continuously growing more complex and difficult to frame. On this segment of today’s HearSay, host Cathy Lewis will speak with a local scholar who's examining the complex interplay of cultural and racial identities in our modern society.

Segement B: “Out In America”
"Out In America" is a documentary airing on WHRO TV-15 on June 4, 2013 at 9:00 pm. It is a collection of unique, transformative stories and inspiring personal narratives told through the lens of the country’s most prominent LGBT figures and pioneers, as well as many average, yet extraordinary, citizens from Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender communities. In this half-hour of HearSay, we'll talk with the producer/director of the film, Andrew Goldberg, and also Dr. Dana Heller, with Old Dominion University Gay Cultural Studies.
ODU’s Gay Cultural Studies, in partnership with WHRO, will present a free screening of "Out In America" prior to the broadcast on WHRO-TV 15, on May 30, 2013 at 7:30 pm, at the Old Dominion University Theater at 4601 Hampton Boulevard in Norfolk. The May 30th event will be hosted by Danny Epperson, WHRO Senior TV & Radio Producer, and Bill Griggs, Executive Director at Young Audiences of Virginia. A post-screening discussion will be moderated by Dr. Dana Heller, Eminent Scholar and Chair, Department of English, Old Dominion University. The event is free and open to the public.
